Creating A Setlist Using Session + Arrangement View Hybrid Method

So you’re convinced using the Hybrid Method is the way to go for your setup but now you’re wondering ‘how do I put together a setlist using this method?’ Without any further ado, let’s get started.

Adding In Songs

Similar to our first step from the last post, find the song you want to drag over to arrangement view, right click on it’s scene, select ‘Select All Slots in Scene’, click and hold the first MIDI (or audio clip) and while holding, tab over to arrangement and drop it on your timeline.

You may notice that your MIDI clip is a different length to your audio clips, this is probably because the tempo is wrong. Right click on the tempo and select ‘Show Automation’ and a dotted line will appear. Create a point on the line at the beginning of your song and then right click on the line, select ‘Edit Value.’ Type in the desired tempo and everything should line up.

For our next song we’ll repeat the process from earlier. In our case the second song is a  different time signature to the first, so we need to add in a ‘Time Signature Change’. After that we’ll update the tempo by adding in a point on the tempo automation line at the bottom where the song begins. Now before editing the value of the tempo point, we’ll create a secondary point and drag it so it’s above the current one. Then from the second point you can right click on the tempo automation line and update the tempo. We do this so our tempos are the same up until the point where we need them to change.

Because our previous song is a different time signature, we need to add another time signature change and then we’ll create our tempo change in the same way we did before.

Adding Locators

Now, the “fun” part. We recommend at the bare minimum, adding in locators for each song, but for those of you who want full flexibility, feel free to add in locators for all sections. You’ll do this using your consolidated MIDI clips as a reference.

Renaming Locators

Lastly, you can rename your locators. Since you have the song sections labeled already, you don’t need to rename the locators for your song sections, but feel free to do so if you want to.

Closing Thoughts

We’ve put this post together to demonstrate how quickly you can build a setlist using this method. There are also other benefits such as being able to transfer your section labels between files and not having to add another label if you duplicate a section in your arrangement. If this tickles your fancy, head to our store to grab your copy of the Section Labels template or click here, and as always, if you have any issues feel free to reach out to us at hello@renderthemusic.com
